Note from principal!

Mission Statement: Our mission at Nottoway Intermediate School is to develop creative young minds with a sense of compassion and respect for others, a devotion to life-long learning, and a desire to be productive citizens in a diverse society.

Vision: To provide a safe, respectful and an engaging learning environment for all students.

marcia martin Nottoway intermediate principalWelcome to Nottoway Intermediate School! My name is Marcia Martin, and I am the principal at Nottoway Intermediate. I have lived in Nottoway my entire life, graduated from Nottoway High School and returned home to work at Nottoway in educating our children.

The staff at Nottoway Intermediate School looks forward to welcoming your child to our school. We believe it is essential to educate our children to be productive members of an ever changing society.

At Nottoway Intermediate we focus on incorporating the 21st century learning skills as well as differentiation of instruction to build student success. High expectations are set for not only our students, but our staff as well.

In order to achieve success, we will continue to build on the gains we have made in the area of math, while incorporating more reading strategies to help our students. In order for student success to occur, it is essential that we work together as a team and connect all the puzzle pieces:  students, staff, parents, and the community. With great communication and collaboration, we will foster a love and appreciation of learning. This year we will focus on moving towards a Growth Mindset where all students can demonstrate success. Throughout the year, you will receive more information on how you can help encourage this mindset at home.

Below are some important informational items you should be made aware of:

  • Please make sure you sign in with the office when visiting the school.
  • A photo ID will be required at all schools when checking out students. This ensures the safety of ALL children, including your child.
  • Students may not be dropped off each day until 7:45 am. Students will report to school through the cafeteria doors.  All students arriving at school before 8:25 should enter through the cafeteria doors.
  • Students may report to their classroom at 8:05 each day, and instruction begins promptly at 8:27.  A child is considered tardy if they arrive after 8:27 am. It is extremely important that your child is on time to school. If your child is tardy, please bring them to the office and sign them in.
  • Classroom instruction does not end until 3:07 pm, so please do not plan to pick up your child for daily dismissal until after this time.  Please be prompt in picking up your child. Parents are to pick up students from the car rider line.
  • Please try to avoid last minute bus changes. The end of the day is busy and avoiding changes greatly helps our office staff.  If your child needs to ride a different bus, a note is required.  All last minute bus changes must be made no later than 2 p.m.
  • Car Riders- Car rider dismissal is very congested. All students that are car-riders will exit through the breeze way in the circle.  The flow of traffic enters from the Intermediate School and exits by the middle school. This is a ONE WAY direction. In order to ensure the safety of all students, students will only be able to access vehicles in the lane closest to the building. They will not be able to cross over or in front of cars. We encourage children to gather their belongings quickly as we are trying to keep the traffic flow moving.
  • We will follow the attendance policy outlined in the Nottoway County Public Schools Parent/Student Handbook, therefore if your child is ill and is absent please send a note.
  • Food Items- Please be advised that due to students with food allergies/intolerances and to keep them safe at school, we are unable to have individual student celebrations during the school day. Teachers will coordinate any activities they may have that involve food for instructional or special events through the office and will notify if something needs to be sent to school.  In the event, that food is requested all items must be store bought with a label attached.

There will be a $10 activity fee this year. There is no fee for your child’s assignment book, they are provided by our PTA.  I encourage you to join the NIS PTA. As you review and fill out the registration form, please ensure that we have the correct information. This is essential for contacting you when your child is sick or any other issues arise. All 6th grade students must have had their TDAP shot before the first day of school. Students without proof of receiving the shot will not be allowed to enter school.

It is my goal for your child to have a rich and rewarding learning experience here at Nottoway Intermediate School. The staff is dedicated to see that your child uses all of his/ her super powers in order to be successful. I look forward to meeting and talking with you as the year progresses. Please do not hesitate to contact me or your child’s teacher with any concerns you may have. It is our goal to work together and finish the race towards educational excellence for all students.

Educationally yours,
Mrs. Martin
