 On behalf of the Nottoway County School Board and its employees, welcome to the
2012-2013 school year. Our goal continues to be to provide academic excellence through a supportive and safe school climate. We do this, first and foremost, by continuing to attract and retain the very best teachers, support staff, and administrative leaders. We recognize the importance of having a shared vision with our students, parents, staff and community. With the support of the entire Nottoway village, we will continue to make Nottoway County Public Schools one of the best in the state.
The mission of Nottoway County Schools is to provide opportunities that enable students to enjoy life, contribute to others’ well being, and become responsible, productive citizens in a global community. I am excited at the prospects of a school year where we will begin the first year of a five year process of systemic change to the culture of our school system. Our focus this year will be preparing our teachers to incorporate increased critical thinking skills, building relationships and utilizing our technology to give our students the tools needed to be prepared in the 21st Century. Nottoway County Schools are at the start of a journey toward the implementation of project-based learning.
Project-based learning is an instructional approach built upon authentic learning activities that engage student interest and motivation. We need to empower our students to enhance their education. A well designed project allows our students to encounter, be challenged and utilize critical thinking skills. The 21st Century skills that will be taught allow students to learn communication and presentation skills, organization and time management skills, research and inquiry skills, self-assessment and reflection skills, group participation and teamwork.
As superintendent, I have personally seen the tremendous efforts to ensure success with all of our students put forth by the dedicated teachers, staff and administration of Nottoway County Public Schools. I am excited that our new venture will help students engage more deeply in the learning process and develop rigorous, positive attitudes towards academic achievement. The future looks very bright for our children. I wish you and your children the very best this school year.
